Sewage in the basement: stay out, stop the water, then call

Short answer

Sewage cleanup in Michigan is Category 3 work: IICRC describes Category 3 water as grossly contaminated and lists sewage and wasteline backflows as examples. Stay out of it, stop using water in the house, and send the request before touching anything. A homeowners policy does not automatically cover sewer backup, and a claim against a city or county needs written notice within 45 days.

Send the request, and say it is sewage

Our form puts the job and your ZIP code first and your phone number last, so one restoration company that serves your ZIP code can call you. Put on the form that the water is sewage.

The first hour with sewage

  1. Stay out of the standing water. MDHHS says floodwater can contain bacteria and raw sewage, and the Red Cross advises gloves, boots and an N95 respirator for cleanup.
  2. Stop using water: every flush and load of laundry sends more down the same pipe.
  3. Stay away from wet electrical equipment, and do not wade to the panel. Turn off power only if you can do it safely.
  4. Photograph the damage from where you stand. Do not carry out belongings, because DIFS asks you to document before cleaning.
  5. Request a company on the form, then call your insurer. Tell the insurer you have water damage, not just flood.
  6. Write down the date you found the damage. Under MCL 691.1419 a claim against a government agency needs written notice within 45 days of discovery.

Why sewage is a different job

IICRC's S500 consensus body quotes Category 3 water as grossly contaminated and able to contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Porous material that sewage soaked is a candidate for removal, and the Red Cross says to throw away wet materials that cannot be repaired or dried. A crew works in protective equipment and with containment, which is why the quote is not comparable to a clean-water job.

If the house has a septic system rather than a sewer, EGLE points to its onsite wastewater guidance and says sampling questions go to the county health department. Private wells after a flood go to MDHHS testing guidance.

What sewage cleanup costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes

Our estimate for sewage cleanup in Michigan is $1,600 to $16,200 per job, or $6 to $16 per square foot. It is a model, not a quote, it rests on one national published range, and the band is wide. DIFS says only that the endorsement costs are relatively low next to the protection and gives no figure, so none is printed here.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's hazardous materials removal worker median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine), the nearest federal occupation to a restoration crew. The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Restoration is priced from measured damage and equipment and is often paid by an insurer, so a real quote can land outside the range. We have not collected quotes, and we found no Michigan restoration company that publishes a price we could count. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.

Who is responsible: you, your plumber or the city

MCL 691.1416 defines a sewage disposal system event as an overflow or backup onto real property, and it is not such an event if a substantial proximate cause, 50 percent or more, was an obstruction in a service lead the agency did not cause, or a connection on your property such as a sump system, building drain, surface drain, gutter or downspout. A claimant must show the agency had a defect it knew or should have known about, and the damages are economic only except in listed cases of serious injury.

Local practice differs. Wyoming, for example, tells residents to call public works before a plumber, and Dearborn sends an inspector to decide if the repair is the city's or the owner's. Your city page lists the number where we found one.

Insurance for a sewer backup

DIFS says water and sewer backup is not automatically covered by a homeowners or renters policy. The endorsement covers backup of water through a sewer or drain and water that overflows from a sump, including backup caused by a sump pump's mechanical breakdown, up to a selected limit. It typically does not cover flood, repair of a broken pump, or a pump worn out through poor maintenance. Our sewer backup coverage guide has the detail.

When a sewage backup cannot wait

Call right away
  • Sewage is coming up through a floor drain, toilet or tub.
  • The water is near outlets, a furnace or the panel.
  • Someone in the house has asthma or a weak immune system.
  • Floodwater from outside is mixed with the sewage.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A slow drain with no water on the floor, which is a plumber's call and not a cleanup job.
  • A smell with no visible water, after the drain has been cleared.
If gas is ever in the air, leave the house, call 911, and call your gas utility from outside: DTE at (800) 947-5000 or Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050. Closing a gas valve is not something to attempt yourself.

Sewer repair and cleanup: licenses and permits in Michigan

Repairing a sewer line is plumbing, which requires a licensed master or journey plumber under MCL 339.6107, and the cleanup crew is not that trade. Rebuilding after the cleanup falls under the maintenance and alteration license from $600 of work. Ask who pulls any permit.

Ask which licenses your state requires for the work, and check them with your state's licensing office before any work starts. A credential from a private body, such as IICRC, is not a license.

A tool for this job

Water category explainer

IICRC S500, the industry standard for water damage restoration, sorts water by how contaminated it is, and the category changes what a crew does. This is an industry standard, not a law. We have read only the public parts, so this tool tells you what those parts say and which questions to put to a company.

Questions people ask

Is sewage backup covered by homeowners insurance in Michigan?

Not automatically: DIFS says water and sewer backup is not automatically covered under a homeowners or renters policy. The endorsement pays up to a selected limit, so check yours.

How long do I have to notify the city of a sewage backup?

Written notice within 45 days after you discovered the damage, under MCL 691.1419. The notice names you, your address and phone, the affected property, the date you discovered the damage and a brief description. East Lansing and Lincoln Park both repeat the 45-day rule on their pages.

Can I clean up sewage myself?

We do not recommend it. MDHHS says floodwater can contain bacteria and raw sewage, and the Red Cross and MDHHS advise gloves, boots and an N95 respirator for cleanup. Children and people with weak immunity should stay out.

Who do I call for a sewer backup in Michigan?

Your city's public works first if the street main may be involved, then a plumber and a restoration company. City numbers are on the city pages where we found them, for example Warren and Livonia.

Is flood water the same as sewage?

Not automatically: the S500 consensus body says weather-related water and wind-driven rain are not automatically Category 3, and the category comes from inspection. Sewage is Category 3.
