The first hour, step by step
- If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911. Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 is free and confidential; call 911 if someone collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing or cannot be awakened.
- Stay out until the scene is released. S540 assumes law enforcement has released it, and you should not go into a scene that has not been released.
- Do not clean up blood or other body fluids yourself, and keep children and pets away.
- Call your insurer to ask what the policy covers and what documentation it needs.
- Next, request a company on the form and, when it calls, ask what training the crew has and how it disposes of waste.
- If you are struggling, Michigan 211 connects people with local help.
The standard, and what it is not
ANSI/IICRC S540 is the Standard for Trauma and Crime Scene Cleanup, now in its second edition, from 2023. It covers blood and other potentially infectious material and assumes the scene has been released by law enforcement. It is a private industry standard, not a state rule, and it does not give anyone a license. What IICRC means explains how to check a credential.
What biohazard cleanup costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes
Our estimate for biohazard cleanup in Michigan is $2,100 to $4,700 per job. It is a model, not a quote, and a quote for a large scene can fall outside it. The wage rows show what the nearest federal occupation is paid, which is not what a company charges.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $2,100 to $4,700 per job | Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan hazardous materials removal worker median wage ratio (0.94). No Michigan restoration company price is shown, because none of the companies we looked at published a price we could count. |
| Hazardous materials removal worker wage, Michigan median | $22.30 an hour (middle half of workers: $19.66 to $26.65) | What the nearest federal occupation is paid (BLS May 2025, read through O*NET OnLine), not what you are charged. BLS has no water or fire restoration occupation. |
| Same occupation, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn median | $22.30 an hour (middle half: $19.83 to $27.17) | Pay, not price. Mapping to restoration crews is our inference. |
| Same occupation, Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood median | $21.82 an hour (middle half: $19.66 to $27.50) | Pay, not price. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes 2 published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's hazardous materials removal worker median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine), the nearest federal occupation to a restoration crew. The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Restoration is priced from measured damage and equipment and is often paid by an insurer, so a real quote can land outside the range. We have not collected quotes, and we found no Michigan restoration company that publishes a price we could count. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
Michigan's medical waste law
EGLE enforces the Medical Waste Regulatory Act, Part 138 of the Public Health Code, which requires generators of medical waste to register initially and every 3 years. EGLE's page does not mention crime-scene or trauma cleanup, so applying the act to a given job is our inference. Ask how a company transports and disposes of waste, and ask for the paperwork.
What to ask before anyone enters
Ask which IICRC credentials the crew holds, what insurance it carries, how it handles waste, and what is in the written scope. DIFS's warning signs for contractors apply here too: full payment upfront, high pressure and unsolicited offers. Your insurer may recommend a company, but DIFS says you have the right to hire the contractor of your choice.
When a biohazard cannot wait
- Anyone is in danger: call 911.
- The scene has been released and fluids are on carpet, flooring or furnishings.
- Sewage is involved.
- A cleanup after the scene is released, when you need time to reach your insurer and family.
- Odor only, with no visible contamination, which you can raise with the company first.
Licenses and permits for biohazard cleanup in Michigan
EGLE's medical waste program may apply to waste a job generates, and rebuilding afterward falls under the residential maintenance and alteration license from $600 of work.
Ask which licenses your state requires for the work, and check them with your state's licensing office before any work starts. A credential from a private body, such as IICRC, is not a license.

First hour checklist
Pick what happened and say if any hazard applies, and you get a short numbered list that fits one phone screen. It sits beside the request form and does not replace it. Nothing you tap here is sent anywhere.

Does Michigan license biohazard cleanup companies?
No separate state license turned up in what we read. EGLE enforces the Medical Waste Regulatory Act for medical waste generators, and applying it to a given job is our inference.
What is IICRC S540?
The Standard for Trauma and Crime Scene Cleanup, second edition, 2023. It covers blood and other potentially infectious material and assumes scenes have been released by law enforcement.
Who do I call after a death or injury at home?
911 first. Once the scene is released, call your insurer and a cleanup company. Michigan 211 connects callers with local support.
Does insurance pay for biohazard cleanup?
We have no sourced answer. Ask your insurer in writing what the policy covers, and keep every receipt and record.
What should I ask a biohazard company?
Its training, insurance, waste handling and a written scope. DIFS lists full payment upfront and high-pressure tactics as warning signs.
