A burst pipe in Michigan: shut the water, then the order of calls

Short answer

After a burst pipe, shut off the main water valve first, then keep away from wet electrical equipment and photograph the damage. DIFS says standard homeowners policies cover a wide range of winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, though your policy's terms control. A plumber repairs the pipe and a restoration crew dries the house, and EPA says drying should happen within 24 to 48 hours.

Request a company for the water cleanup

The form below asks for the job and your ZIP code first, then your phone number, and one restoration company that serves that ZIP code calls you. Say on the form that a pipe burst, and say if the water is off.

Your first hour with a burst pipe

  1. Close the main water valve. If you cannot find or turn it, say so on the call.
  2. Do not touch wet electrical equipment, and do not wade to the panel. Turn off power to the wet area only if you can do it safely.
  3. Open a faucet at the lowest point to drain the line once the main is off, if the water is not near anything electrical.
  4. Film and photograph the damage before you clean, and list the belongings that are wet.
  5. Call your insurer and describe the loss as water damage. Ask what the policy needs from you.
  6. Call a plumber for the pipe and request a company on the form for the water. Keep every receipt.

A plumber and a restoration crew do different work

A plumbing license is required to do plumbing work in Michigan: MCL 339.6107 says only a licensed master or journey plumber shall perform plumbing. So the restoration company does not repair the pipe, even if the same company offers a plumber. The crew's job is the water: extraction, drying, and removal of what cannot be saved. The IICRC S500 standard assumes the owner is responsible for fixing the source.

Ask who is doing what, in writing. If a restoration company quotes the plumbing, ask for the plumber's license number and verify it on the state's lookup.

What burst pipe cleanup costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes

Our estimate for burst pipe cleanup in Michigan is $1,225 to $5,350 per job, water cleanup after the pipe is repaired. It is a model, not a quote, and it uses the water damage ranges because cost guides price the cleanup there; the plumber's repair is a separate bill. The wage rows show pay for the nearest federal occupation, which is not a charge.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes 3 published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's hazardous materials removal worker median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine), the nearest federal occupation to a restoration crew. The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Restoration is priced from measured damage and equipment and is often paid by an insurer, so a real quote can land outside the range. We have not collected quotes, and we found no Michigan restoration company that publishes a price we could count. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.

How Michigan insurers treat a burst pipe

DIFS's winter-storm page says standard homeowners policies cover a wide range of winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, ice dams, wind damage and leaky roofs, and that backup of sewers and drains may be available by endorsement while flood is excluded from most standard policies. It adds a prevention tip: keep the home at least 65 degrees to prevent freezing pipes. Each policy's terms control, and we could not find a DIFS page that defines sudden versus gradual damage, so check your policy for wording on leaks.

Because the duty to limit damage applies, shutting off the water and starting drying are part of the claim, and the receipts belong in it.

Why a burst pipe left wet becomes a mold problem

EPA says water-damaged areas and items should dry within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth, and that mold can grow on wood, drywall, carpet and furniture left wet for more than 24 hours after a flood. A pipe that burst while the house was empty is the case to worry about: the water had time. If drywall or insulation stayed wet, say so on the call. The mold remediation page covers what to do if growth has started.

When a burst pipe cannot wait

Call right away
  • Water is still running and the main will not close.
  • Water is near the panel, outlets or an appliance.
  • A ceiling is sagging or dripping under the break.
  • The break is in a room below freezing, and more pipes may follow.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A pinhole leak you have shut off at the fixture valve, with no water on the floor.
  • Damp drywall that has already been photographed and is drying.
Smell gas at any point? Leave the house and call 911, then phone your gas utility from outside: DTE at (800) 947-5000 or Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050. Never try to shut off a gas valve yourself.

Who may fix the pipe and rebuild: licenses and permits

Replacing the pipe is plumbing work under MCL 339.6107, which needs a licensed plumber, and a homeowner may be allowed to do some of it on their own home with a permit, which we do not cover here. Rebuilding drywall and flooring in a one- or two-family home for pay needs the maintenance and alteration license from $600 of work.

Ask which licenses your state requires for the work, and check them with your state's licensing office before any work starts. A credential from a private body, such as IICRC, is not a license.
